Class #7 October 27, 2011
This week’s topic is on visual communication. We began the class with a debate on visual communication when we split the room in half and each stands on the opposite sides of the room. Our speaker was promoting Adobe Photoshop and other visual arts. The speaker talked about how the church changed the logo to contrast more in Jesus Christ, to show that the church is built more around him. Another student brought up how we all as people have a low attention span because before we get bored while watching the same commercial over and over all the time but now we have stuff like TEVO or DVR that has a way to fast forward through commercials. He recommend us to take a visual class that deals with Adobe Photoshop. At the end of the class he showed us a video and how the fashion models get photos taken of them, then they edit the photos to a whole other person.

We watch some creative commercials that were funny but then it leaves the message in your head to buy certain products.  For example they had a cheese commercial that plays with your emotions at first but then it turns out to be funny (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejEBSeddCg8 ). Sometimes you forget about the product but when you go to the store and see it, the image of the commercial pops in your head. Some commercial have negative effect on people and not makes them want to the buy their product again.

Class #5 October 13, 2011

This week we are learning about marketing and advertising. We first talk about how genius Taco Bell was. Basically Taco Bell was getting almost free advertisement by putting a target out in the ocean and they said if the MIR that coming from outer space hits the target Taco Bell put out in the ocean, then everyone gets free tacos. So most of the news channels will be talking about it and how they are doing this promotion before the MIR hits the ocean and then after to report the results. Not to mention all the blogs from people about the Taco Bell’s promotion. The result was the MIR did not hit the target but Taco Bell got a lot of free advertising that would have cost them a lot of money. While the promotion was going on they had a raise in their sales. To run a 30 second commercial during the Super Bowel, it would cost almost 2 million dollars.
The next topic we touched on was Wendy’s. Someone tried to pull a fast one on Wendy’s on how they put a finger in their chili. It was fraud because the people that put the finger in the chili wanted to sue Wendy’s. They found out the truth eventually but at the time no one would want to eat at chili because they thought about the whole scandal about the finger until Wendy’s held a press conference telling the story about the situation.

3.     There is a page that helps you learn about scams and fraud. It shows you how to protect yourself from fraud.
4.     The site also has links to career test. The career test helps someone learn more about themselves and learn what they enjoy doing.

Class #2 September 22, 2011

The speaker this week was Brother Williams and he was giving a talk about about how he teaches journalism. He talked about different things about journalism and what topics they would do, like how they touch on controversial topics. He goes on and gives of an example about this Russian reporter who predicted her own death because she was a reporter that made the bad people look bad, she receive plenty of death threats. Brother Williams also talked about how CNN would tell us about what goes on in the world and also touch on scandal and the government. Other journalists touch upon human intrest stories. Brother Williams told us a story of a girl who was abused and never attended school and no one looked into it for awhile but when the police finally stepped in the girl did not even know how to read but in the end she was adopted by a loving family. The last thing Brother Williams talked about was a husband and wife that survived a plane crashed they were scared and burned all over. The wife was in a coma for a little while and when she woke up she never thought she would be keeping a daily blog of her life. The husband and wife have kids and everyday is a struggle for the wife. She is a different person now than she use to be. She explains in her blog how she longs for her old self. She is an inspiration to many people and she says she keeps the blog because it is what heavenly father wants her to do. In journalism you must be a good story teller and be persuasive in reporting.

The instructor also gave out cards that had the smart phones codes on them. She custom made them to say something about how COMM100 rules. I know this class might be a difficult one but I have a feeling that I will learn plenty from this class about my future career in communications. We have a small quiz every day at the end of class for our attendance.
